“FAIZ KI KAHANI – KUCH UNKI KUCH HAMARI ZABANI”
Pakistan National Council of the Arts, Islamabad

6th AND 7th OCTOBER, 2012

The Annual Function of the Perveen Shakir Trust was held on 6th and 7th October, 2012 at Pakistan National Council of the Arts, Islamabad.  “Faiz Ki Kahani - Kuch Unki Kuch Hamari Zabani” is the title of the doco-drama staged to pay tribute to the legendary poet.

First day of the Annual Function consisted of two parts. Mr. Agha Nasir was the Chief Guest. The well-known writer, broadcaster, the pioneer of PTV, dramatist and producer had known Perveen Shakir who was a family friend.  Also he has had a long friendship with Faiz sahib and has recently written a book “Hum Jeetay Ji Masroof Rahey” based on his poetry.

The evening began with a welcome address by the Chairperson. She informed the audience about the Trust’s objectives and thanked everyone for their support. The “Perveen Shakir Aks-e-Khushboo” awards for the years 2009, 2010 and 2011 were awarded  to Mr. Shahzad Nayyar for his poetic collection  “Chaak Sey Utrey Wajood”,  Mr. Hasan Abbasi for “Ik Shaam Tumharey Jesi Ho” and Mr. Ahmad Attaullah for “Hamesha” respectively.  The “Aks-e-Khushboo” award has been designed by Mr. Mazhar-ul-Islam, one of the most active life members of the Trust and MD of National Book Foundation.  The flower shaped award represents one of Perveen Shakir’s most beautiful imagery “Khushboo”.  Her readers would recall that her first poetic collection “Khushboo” took the poetry lovers by storm.  This was the year 1977 and the distributor boasts that the book was one of the best sellers (even now is) and had 17 editions within a year.

The “Perveen Shakir Gold Medal” was awarded for 2009, 2010 and 2011 to Miss. Kiran Lateef of Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, Miss. Aqeela Rani of Islamia University, Bahawalpur and Mr. Sajjad Hussain Cheehani of Shah Abdul Lateef University Khairpur respectively. The gold medal is awarded every year to a student from a different university of the country securing 1st position in M.A. English as Perveen Shakir had two masters degrees,  one in English Literature and the other in Linguistics. However, for the year 2010 we made an exception and the gold medal was awarded to Miss. Aqeela Rani for securing 1st position in M.A. Urdu.  Then the Chief Guest was presented a set of PST publications.  In his address Mr. Agha Nasir recalled his association with Perveen Shakir, deliberated upon her contribution to Urdu poetry and appreciated the efforts of the Trust.

The second part of the evening’s program was the stage doco-drama “Faiz Ki Kahani – Kuch Unki Kuch Hamari Zabani”. It is Mr. Mazhar-ul-Islam’s brain-child and its screenplay has been written by Mr. Aqeel Ruby. The renowned TV artist Mr. Qavi Khan acted as Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Mrs. Rahat Multanikar beautifully sang Faiz saheb’s kalam.  Mrs. Nargis Rasheed was the compare for the evening.

The doco-drama started with rendition of Perveen Shakir’s nazm “Faiz Kay Firaq Maen” by Mrs. Nargis Rasheed. The nazm in poet’s own hand writing is reproduced here for her readers.

While the nazm was rendered, in the background a documentary showing Faiz saheb’s ancestral hometown “Kala Qadir” was shown. The audience was carried back in time and shown the place where the legendary poet lived and the school where he studied. Then the great TV artist Mr. Qavi Khan appears on the stage acting as Faiz sahib. The doco-drama is a loud-thinking by the poet about his life and his poetic journey. The performance was very much appreciated by the audience and everyone felt that it was one of the most authentic and well documented doco-drama on the life of Faiz sahib.  The next day the press had very positive reviews. Some of them are re-produced below for the interest of poetry lovers. The electronic media too gave full coverage to the event for which the Trust is ever so grateful.

On the second day again the “Faiz Ki Kahani – Kuch Unki Kuch Hamari Zabani” was staged and very much appreciated by the audience. The evening ended with rendition of ghazals by Mrs. Rahat Multanikar who on great demand by the audience also sang some of her mother’s, the legendary Surriya Multanikar’s famous numbers.

The Trust has published a very impressive card and brochure on the occasion.
